What are the differences in life insurance types?

I had no idea there were so many types of life insurance (Whole Life, Variable Life, Universal Life and Variable Universal Life)!

What's the difference between them all? I always thought of life insurance purely as a stack of money that was given to your beneficiary if you die to cover expenses and then keep the excess.

Clearly there's more to it than that though...
